Hugging strangers at the Southbank Centre

HUG at the Southbank Centre
The audience mid-HUG

My fellow performer handed me her phone. She had just received a text from a friend, and it turned out I had been hugging that same friend in our last performance. I read the text and my breath caught a little:

“He sang just like my uncle, who’s passed away. And it felt like I was hugging him one last time”

There was more to the message, all of it very nice. But I couldn’t get over that one line. I still can’t get over it really.

One of the joys of singing, and performing in general, is branching out of our comfort zones and testing ourselves. A lot of the time I’ve done this with Pop-Up, whether it was Argentine circle singing or providing vocal back up to some extremely weird organ music. However it’s also good to branch out of the choir itself sometimes and try something truly outside the group’s repertoire and experience.

When the Southbank Centre’s singing initiative Voicelab contacted Pop-Up with some singing opportunities, one caught my eye. HUG. I wish I had better reasons for why it caught my eye and I chose to audition for it, but the real reason is pretty simple.

This thing sounded weird.Continue reading “Hugging strangers at the Southbank Centre”

OMA’s live show has been described as an eclectic mix between Marianne Faithfull, Chicks on Speed and Joan As Police Woman

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our first gig of the year will be on Sunday March 8th with the wonderful a capella group OMA to celebrate the launch of their video for THE ROAD, which features in Oliver Warren’s film Cusp.

Esmerelda Ruiz, who sings in OMA, recently led Pop-Up’s spring workshop at the Union Chapel in Islington – she’s a fantastic, vibrant leader and a terrific singer, and we can’t wait to put her teaching to good use as the opening act for OMA’s launch party.

We’ll be singing at 7.45pm, and the gig is at Arch1 in E16. Tickets are £7 on the door, or £5 if you email arch1@arch.co.uk.

My Top 5: Break-Up Songs

Scarlett O'Hara break-up

January is a terrible time for break-ups. Not that there is ever a particularly good time for it, mind, but good grief: everyone seems to be at it at the moment.

(Do not get us started on Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter.)

But look. You can’t beat a good breakup song. They’re therapeutic to whine along to when in dressing gown and box of tissues mode. And invigorating to dance that pain away to on the dancefloor.

We asked the Pop-Up Choir to list five of their favourites. There are just too many good ones out there to choose from though so we’ve got 10 for you, split over two blog posts. These five came from Jordana, Heike and Emma. Turn up the volume and sing your little heart out.Continue reading “My Top 5: Break-Up Songs”

Auditions, workshops and meet our new MD!

Workshops!
Workshops!

It’s a lovely thing, mulling over the year while full of turkey leftovers (seriously: that thing was cooked on the 25th, it should be finished by now or we’ll all die).

The blog has been quiet this term while we’ve got to the important matters of auditions, new workshops – and hiring a new MD.

And in great news, we’ve chosen one!

My Top 5: Swedish Songs

The Pop-Up Choir's ladies in red
Ladies in red at rehearsal

This is a guest post from Sophie, one of our Alto 1s – she’s second from left in this frankly ridiculous piece of coincidence from our last rehearsal, when most of our sopranos and altos managed to come dressed as the Pantone chart for red! Anyway, Sophie is a cracking DJ and really knows her tunes, so exactly the right person to introduce our new My Top 5 series, where you can find out more about the awesome people who make up our choir. Over to you Sophie!Continue reading “My Top 5: Swedish Songs”

We’re hiring! Are you our new musical director?

the pop-up choir dom stichbury
After four fantastic years, our MD Dom Stichbury is leaving Pop-Up.  They are big shoes to fill: as well as leading us and bringing us on, Dom arranges our music and is a totally stand-up guy.

We are looking for a confident and dynamic Musical Director with a strong fun-loving personality who is keen to work with a vibrant group of singers. If this sounds like you,  we’d love to hear from you.

UPDATE: Applications for the role have closed. Thank you to everyone who has applied, we’re thrilled to have such a fantastic group of musical directors interested in working with us.

I Did This: Open Mic Night @ Pilgrim Pub in Kennington

Baritone Philly Desai (centre) on popping up at the Pilgrim Pub

Guest post by Pop-Up’s Philly

Feeling that my life needed more public embarrassment, I have decided to explore the Open Mike scene of south London: the lure of the sticky carpets and crackly PAs was irresistible, so I tuned my guitar and headed to Pilgrim Pub in Kennington for their Thursday Open Mic Night.Continue reading “I Did This: Open Mic Night @ Pilgrim Pub in Kennington”
