When I first moved to London I went to a Finsbury Park festival called Rise. In a tent, I saw an elderly woman dressed like she’d been dragged headfirst through the Victorian era, rapping.
London has got MAJORLY WEIRD, I thought. It took me a frankly embarrassing amount of time to twig that the queen of “artificial hip-hop”, Ida Barr – for it was she – was the alter ego of Christopher Green: the chameleon comedian behind Tina C, Office Party and a bouquet of excellent Radio 4 shows.
We at Pop-Up love Ida’s “pie and mash-ups” – Stannah to Heaven is a particular favourite. And if you missed her Angina Monologues then we really don’t know what to say.
In 2012, Pop-Up sang at Ida Barr’s Right Old Song and Dance, and we are thrilled that she will be compering Masters of Pop tomorrow night. Expect rapping, barbs and glorious chat – we can’t wait to see her there.
MASTERS OF POP is on Saturday 14 June at St Giles Church, Camberwell Church Street, SE5 – doors 7pm, music starts at 7.45pm. Tickets are £5 in advance or £6 on the door.
The 12, 171, 36, 436 and 345 buses all pass the church, and if you’re football-minded, we’ve got a pub to watch England V Italy in after the gig.
